Editor’s note: Bath Time has been overwhelmed by the incredible work of our students and wants to highlight this positivity during this challenging period as much as possible. If you have a story of goodwill, fundraising or community spirit you’d like to share with us then get in touch via email or on our social media channels.
The Covid-19 pandemic is one of the most devastating health emergencies we have experienced in recent years. We all know by now how incredibly sad and problematic the situation is and that it is taking its toll on the world. Everyone has been affected by now, for some it may be as simple as having to miss out on Score, MNB or Fame, others may have struggled with the virus themselves, seen loved ones suffer with it or noticed a decline in their mental health during isolation. Fatalities are constantly rising even though doctors, nurses, volunteers and researchers are giving their all to fight and control the virus. Following local government guidelines is the most important thing anyone can do – staying at home, practicing social distancing and washing your hands are vital.
As young athletes however, the University of Bath Lacrosse club wanted to go the extra mile and show our support for the NHS by pushing ourselves to our fitness limits. By setting and completing fitness challenges this week we want to raise awareness, and money, for the incredible work the NHS staff are doing at this time and support them, as well as Covid-19 patients through the NHS Charities Covid-19 Urgent Appeal. The funds gathered on behalf of NHS Charities will help the NHS support the physical and mental wellbeing of staff and their families and allowing them to mentally support patients in isolation. This is incredibly important – the NHS staff can only help us if they are healthy and safe themselves. The club is aiming to raise £2500 for this incredible cause, but of course would love to beat this target with your help!
We have some amazing efforts from our members both individually and as teams – the Women’s first team are running, cycling, swimming and rowing at least 1000 km this week, both the women’s and men’s development squads are competing in daily fitness challenges like the Bring Sally Up plank challenge, and the Women’s second team are doing 2020 burpees every day for three consecutive days. Many of us are completing individual challenges in addition to this, for example cycling 350 km throughout the week, running a 5k for every nomination alongside a 5 pound donation or doing thousands of squats, crunches or sit ups. Some of the challenges are interactive as well, so keep an eye out for those on our donation page. For example, every time the record for as many sit ups in five minutes as possible gets broken, money is donated and you can nominate people to do more reps or kilometres with your donation.
