A transgender woman from Bath has been sentenced to an all-male prison in Bristol by Bath Magistrates on Friday.
Tara Hudson, a milk street resident, admitted to assault after an incident on Boxing Day in 2014 and has been sentenced to 12 weeks at category 2 HM Bristol prison.
Tara underwent gender affirmation surgery 6 years ago and has lived as a woman her entire adult life.
An online petition calling on Bath Magistrates to amend Tara’s sentence and send her to an all-female prison has already received over 5000 signatories after less than 24 hours. The petition, signed by Will Sandry the Mayor of bath as well as Natalie Bennet the Green Party Leader, says that this decision is a “breach of her human rights” and places her in “extreme danger of abuse, sexual violence, and even death.”
Tara’s mother, Jackie Brooklyn, has said that her doctor has confirmed she is now a woman, even though her passport still states she is male.
Jackie went on to say “”I don’t want her going backwards with her mental health. She’s been through a hard time and this could set her right back.
“I don’t think the magistrates have taken that into consideration. I fear that it is a potentially dangerous situation for her to be in and feel strongly that she would be far safer in a female environment.”
“While I understand it is a complex issue, the treatment of transgender individuals by the British judicial system is one that clearly requires greater attention and thought.”
“The primary focus should be the safety and wellbeing of those involved.”
A Prison Service spokesman said: “It is longstanding policy to place offenders according to their legally recognised gender.
“There are strict rules in place to ensure transsexual prisoners are managed safely and in accordance with the law.”
