The mens 1s Basketball team faced top of the league East London last week hoping to improve upon a tough loss earlier in the season. From the start it was clear that this was going to be a completely different performance. Bath moved the ball well, hit their open shots, and defended tirelessly, stretching out an 8 point lead early in the first quarter. UEL began to find their shooting range towards the end of the quarter and closed the gap, but Bath hung on to a one point lead, ending the quarter 27-26 up. The home side maintained the high tempo in the second quarter and continued to trouble their opponents, with fresher Will O’Brien scoring 6 points in a row to keep Bath in the lead. But again the second half of the quarter belonged to UEL, with the score 41-49 in their favour at half time.
Five three pointers in a row from the University of Bath brought them back into the game in the 3rd, ending the quarter just 5 points behind, 67-72. A three pointer from Andy Galloway at the beginning of the fourth brought the game to within 2 points with just 8 minutes remaining. At this point the experience of the East London team showed as they managed to stretch out their lead, eventually running out comfortable winners. All players contributed in what was an all round team display from Bath, with 5 players contributing double figures ( Hulme 18, Riley 15, Cieply 13, Lamaris 14, O’Brien 10). In what was easily their best performance of the season Bath can take a lot forward into their final league game against Oxford at home tomorrow. So why not go to the founders hall tomorrow afternoon and support the boys as they look to end the year on a high.
Final score: Bath 80 – 106 UEL
