University of Bath excels in sport but lets down creative students, survey says

The University of Bath is the third best university in the country for sport, but fails to entice students preferring creative activities, a survey by Which? suggests.

The University of Bath scored 92% satisfaction rating on sporting-based activities, just below St. Mary’s University and Loughborough University in the Which? University Student Survey 2014.

However, the University scored a lacklustre 45% satisfaction rating on the institution’s creative scene, well below the 68% national average, with one second year physicist saying “there is much more emphasis on sports than arts at the university”

Despite this criticism, many of the respondents did note that students did have the option to do creative activities if they wished despite the University’s emphasis on science and sport.

Other results highlighted was the variety of union activities (76%),  accessibility of politics (47%), and diversity of local nightlife (59%), the results of which came out within the national ‘average’.

As a whole, comments on the University were overwhelmingly positive with participants emphasising the “friendly and helpful” staff and “the excellent range of clubs and societites”.

Negative comments noted “you barely get any personalised help”, as well as “library space and social areas to work on campus”

On the below-average response to creative activities, University of Bath Students’ Union Activities Officer, Freddy Clapson told bathimpact: “The new Centre for the Arts, which is opening in February, will give our societies a dedicated space to explore the Arts. It will also play host to many of our societies’ shows, giving our societies the space to rehearse and perform in a space worthy of their talents.”

The survey, carried out by the consumer magazine, is not the only gauge for student satisfaction. Last year, the National Student Survey placed Bath in first place out of 150 other universities, with an overall satisfaction rating of 93%.

Jordan Kenny, President of the Students’ Union, said on the success in recent surveys: “For the Students’ Union and the University to continue to be regarded by our own students as one of the best in the country is a real testament to the work of our University community. We are incredibly proud of the work we do to ensure students get the very best experience while at Bath.”

Nationally, the University of Bath has enjoyed an increasing presence in league tables, placing fourth on The Guardian University Guide, eighth on the Complete University Guide and seventh on the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.

League tables take a number of factors into account, including graduate employability, entry grades, student to staff ration and student satisfaction scores, all of which the University of Bath scores highly in.
